When Can You See Fireworks in Japan? Seasonal Overview
First of all, most fireworks festivals in Japan are concentrated between late July and August. During this period, large-scale fireworks events are held across the country, and in Tokyo and Yokohama, many famous events take place one after another. If you want to experience “Japanese fireworks,” this summer season is the easiest time to do so.
On the other hand, there are actually opportunities to enjoy fireworks outside of summer as well. In early summer in June, there are season-opening fireworks events, and in autumn, there are exceptional large-scale events and revival events, making it possible to enjoy fireworks while avoiding some of the peak crowds.
Even on days without major fireworks festivals, short fireworks displays are sometimes held in Yokohama and Maihama (Tokyo Disney Resort). These fireworks are modest in scale, lasting around five minutes, but the appeal is that you can enjoy Japanese fireworks in a relaxed way together with the night view.

The best season for fireworks is summer! Winter and spring are the off-season.

Yokohama Port Opening Festival|Early Summer Fireworks with Minato Mirai Night Views
The Yokohama Port Opening Festival, held in early June, is an event celebrating the opening of Yokohama’s port and one of the rare opportunities to enjoy fireworks in early summer.
The fireworks launched along the Minato Mirai waterfront overlap with views of the Ferris wheel and high-rise buildings, creating a uniquely Yokohama setting. While more compact than major summer fireworks festivals, they are also easier to enjoy in a relatively relaxed atmosphere.
Because the crowds are not as intense as during the peak season, this event is also an easy choice for those experiencing Japanese fireworks for the first time.

The fireworks launched from two venues are large in scale, giving you the atmosphere of a true “Japanese summer fireworks festival.” As one of Tokyo’s most popular events, the viewing areas can become very crowded, but that is also part of the appeal of enjoying such high-quality fireworks up close.

Because music live performances are held together with the fireworks, the event has a strong entertainment element and is easy to enjoy even for first-time visitors. Rather than a purely traditional fireworks festival, it is more like “fireworks as an event.”
Its central Tokyo location is also a major advantage. Since it is easy to access in a short amount of time, it can be incorporated into a travel itinerary without much difficulty.

Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival|A Major Fireworks Festival Returning After 11 Years
The Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival was once one of Tokyo’s representative fireworks festivals, but it had not been held for many years. In 2026, it has been announced that the event will return for the first time in about 11 years, attracting significant attention.
Set against Tokyo Bay, the fireworks launched with Rainbow Bridge and the high-rise skyline in the background offer one of the most beautiful locations for urban fireworks. Unlike summer, the crisp autumn night air can make the fireworks feel even clearer.
