Why will Yokohama be crowded in 2027?

In 2027, Yokohama will host GREEN×EXPO 2027 (International Horticultural Expo 2027, Yokohama)!
With many visitors expected from Japan and overseas, crowds won’t be limited to the expo area—busy scenes are also likely across major sightseeing districts such as Minato Mirai, Yamashita Park, and Kannai.
As a result, it’s hard to avoid higher hotel prices and limited room availability.
If you keep thinking “someday,” planning your trip may become harder than you expect.

Why we recommend visiting in 2026

To put it simply, planning your Yokohama trip for 2026 is the smart choice.
As preparations for the expo move forward, the city’s atmosphere and events will start to build excitement—while major crowds and price spikes are still less likely than during the expo year.
You’ll have more hotel options and more flexibility for your schedule.
It may be your last chance to enjoy “just-right Yokohama” before everything gets much busier.

Best time to visit Yokohama (and why)

January–February | Clear winter air & dazzling night views

Winter in Yokohama is actually a beautiful season.
Illuminations are still running, and the whole city feels romantic and sparkling at night.
Because there are many sunny days and the air is crisp and clear, you can enjoy not only Minato Mirai’s nightscape, but also a higher chance of seeing Mount Fuji on clear days.
This is one of the best times of year to fully appreciate Yokohama’s “New Three Great Night Views of Japan.”

Late March–Early April | Cherry blossoms & comfortable spring weather

As the cold fades, strolling around the city becomes much more enjoyable.
From late March, cherry blossoms start blooming across the city and everything feels bright and festive!

In Yokohama and Minato Mirai, there are many famous cherry-blossom spots—around Landmark Tower, along the Ookagawa River, at Yamashita Park, and at Sankeien Garden—so there’s plenty to see.
Because crowds are not as intense as in central Tokyo, another big perk is that you can enjoy hanami (cherry-blossom viewing) at a more relaxed pace.

Mid–Late May | The best balance after Golden Week crowds

This is when Japan’s big holiday period (Golden Week) is over and domestic travel demand starts to calm down.
Hotel prices also begin to settle, making it easier to book your stay.
With GREEN×EXPO preparations underway, flowerbeds and greenery in spots like Yamashita Park are beautifully maintained—making this an ideal season for sightseeing.

Let’s plan your Yokohama trip for 2026!

First, find the hotel you want to stay at

As 2027 gets closer, hotels in Yokohama may become even more crowded and harder to book.
That’s why we recommend checking accommodation options during 2026, when choices are wider and prices are relatively stable.

In Yokohama and Minato Mirai, you’ll find many high-level hotels that offer truly special stays. Service is excellent, and the views and access are fantastic. And surprisingly, compared with central Tokyo, they can be a bit more affordable.

Next, search for flights to Japan (Haneda Airport or Narita Airport)

Try to book your flights as early as possible! In recent years, international travel demand to Japan has been rising, and airfare can increase quickly. Many tickets use dynamic pricing depending on seat availability—so booking early is usually the best strategy.

When visiting Yokohama, you’ll usually fly into Haneda Airport or Narita Airport. On most flight search sites, just type Tokyo and you’re good to go.

For convenience, we recommend Haneda Airport. From Haneda, Yokohama is just about 30 minutes away by airport bus.
Narita Airport is farther from Yokohama and central Tokyo, but with the Narita Express, you can still reach Yokohama comfortably in about 90 minutes.

Compare prices and seat availability, then choose whichever airport makes the most sense for your trip.

We’ve tried a few booking sites, and Omio is especially easy to use. Sometimes they also run promos or even include perks like a free eSIM—so it’s a great option!

From the airport to Yokohama: learn the basics first (bookmark recommended)

Getting to Yokohama from Haneda or Narita is easy. And for these airport transfers, booking about a month before—or even on the day—can still be totally fine. The key is to learn your options in advance.
We also put together easy-to-understand access guides plus useful ticket tips, so we recommend bookmarking the pages below!

Let’s plan your activities in Yokohama

Once your hotel and flights are booked, it’s time to decide what you’d like to do in Yokohama.
You could enjoy a cruise, or admire the night view from Yokohama Marine Tower.
Check booking sites for facility details and discounted tickets before you go.

If you’re combining Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and more, prepare a Japan Rail Pass too

Finally, if you want to explore not only Yokohama but also places like Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto, it’s a good idea to check domestic transportation options in Japan as well.

Major trains, Shinkansen, flights, and buses can also be booked via Trip.com or Klook.
Note: Omio does not support domestic travel bookings within Japan, so keep that in mind.

If you’re planning to use the Shinkansen often, Japan Rail Pass is also well worth considering!
You can even use it for some routes between the airport and Yokohama—so if you’re traveling around a lot, it may be a great value.

When should you start preparing for GREEN×EXPO 2027 (International Horticultural Expo 2027, Yokohama)?

We recommend visiting Yokohama in 2026. But if your goal is to attend GREEN×EXPO 2027, it’s best to start researching GREEN×EXPO and Yokohama sightseeing early.

GREEN×EXPO is scheduled from Friday, March 19, 2027 to Sunday, September 26, 2027. Flights and hotels can usually be booked about a year in advance, so starting early in 2026 is key!

Especially in the later months like August–September, we expect a last-minute rush (similar to Osaka Expo), making tickets and hotels harder to secure—so early planning is important!

Finally, we’re always keeping up with the latest Yokohama/Minato Mirai updates and sharing them here.
We’ll continue posting about 2026 sightseeing and events, as well as GREEN×EXPO 2027.
